Mirbek TURDUEV

Proceedings Paper | 2023 | 2023 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC)

In this paper, we introduce the design approach of integrated photonic devices by employing reinforcement learning known as attractor selection (AttSel). Here, we combined 3D FDTD with AttSel algorithm, which is based on artificial neural networks, to achieve ultra-compact and highly efficient wavelength demultiplexers with low crosstalk such as. The presented devices consist of SOI materials, which are compatible with complementary MOS technology. Consequently, the reinforcement learning is successfully applied to design smaller and superior integrated photonic devices. Keyword: inverse design; machine learning; wavelength demultiplexing

A Comparative Analysis of Productivity Growth, Catch-Up, and Convergence in Transition Economies

Ertuğrul DELİKTAŞ

Proceedings Paper | 2005 | Emerging Markets Finance and Trade41 ( 1 )

The paper examines the macroeconomic performance of 25 transition economies using a comparable data set. In order to see whether transition to a market-based economy increased economic efficiency, technical progress, and total factor productivity (TFP), we estimate efficiency measures for Eastern European and Baltic countries and the republics of the former Soviet Union using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis as a confirmatory analysis. According to the SFA estimates, the average annual efficiency level for the 25 transition economies is 0.548, and the average annual rate of growth in technical efficie . . .ncy is 1.8 percent for the 1991-2000 period. The average annual technical change in transition economies is -4.3 percent for the period examined. That is, there is no technological progress, but over the period there has been a technological regress. The sum of the rate of change in technical efficiency and technical change implies a 2.5 percent decline in the average annual TFP. These results suggest that, on average, change in technical efficiency is outweighed by the technical regress. - Keywords: convergence, data envelopment analysis, stochastic production frontiers, technical efficiency, total factor productivity, transition economie More less

Classification of high frequency transient events buried in low frequency sampled PMU data

Özgül SALOR-DURNA

Proceedings Paper | 2023 | Proceedings

This paper presents a deep-learning based method for the classification of transient events of the power system using the data collected by a standard Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU). Although transient power system events are high-frequency variations of the voltages and currents, it leaves a trace in the PMU time-series data, which are collected at relatively much lower-frequencies. The main motivation of this study is to use low-frequency data recorded by PMU devices, widely used in the industry, for the classification of transient events, which would normally require the use of high-cost power quality analyzers. In the proposed me . . .thod, PMU data are converted into 2D data by Gramian Angular Field (GAF) image transformation method to increase the classification performance. Then, the GAF matrices corresponding to PMU time-series data are classified by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based deep learning method. Transient event data used in this research work includes different numbers of frequency and angle time series of three different events, Line Trip, Generation Trip and Load Shedding, obtained from the Frequency Disturbance Recorders (FDR) developed at Virginia Tech. FDRs are connected to the FNET/GridEye network hosted by the University of Tennessee. Classification performances on the three power system events show that using only the frequency data gives the best performance results compared to that using angle only and both frequency and angle. Impact of the training data amount is examined for all cases and future work is proposed. Although there are similar studies in the literature, contribution of this research work is revealing the effect of PMU data type and size of training set in detail. Asymptotics of the Solution of Parabolic Problems with Multipoint Stationary Phase

Asan ÖMÜRALİEV | Ella ABILAYEVA

Proceedings Paper | 2017 | AIP Conference Proceedings1880 ( 1 )

The aim of this paper is to construct regularized asymptotics of the solution of a singularly perturbed parabolic problem when the limit operator has not range and with rapidly oscillating free term, its derivative of the phase vanishes at finite points. The vanishing of the first derivative of the phase of the free term induces transition layers. It is shown that the asymptotic solution of the problem contains parabolic, inner, corner and rapidly oscillating boundary-layer functions. Corner boundary-layer functions have two components: the first component is described by the product of parabolic boundary layer and boundary layer fu . . .nctions, which have a rapidly oscillating nature of the change, and the second component is described by the product of the inner and parabolic boundary layer functions More less

Properties of ZnO and Zn Nanoparticles Produced by Electrical Discharge in Liquid Method

Emil ÖMÜRZAK

Proceedings Paper | 2022 | International Exchange and Innovation Conference on Engineering and Sciences8

The physical processes used to synthesize nanoparticles today are labor-intensive and inefficient in terms of energy use. Our approach, which we employed to create nanoparticles, is straightforward and economical. Using this technique, we synthesized Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and investigated their characteristics using several characterization techniques. We can regulate the form and size of our nanoparticles by altering the experimental conditions, as demonstrated by our investigations. This demonstrates the importance of experimental parameters in synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles by this method. This approach produced ZnO nano . . .particles that were smaller than those described in the literature and had a blue shift, as a result, greater band gap energy. Using this technique, we improved process productivity while controlling the shape of our ZnO nanoparticles. Keyword: electric discharge; nanoparticles; synthesis; zinc oxid More less

An Electric Arc Furnace Model Based on Resynthesis Using Frequency Spectrum Distributions of EAF Currents

Özgül SALOR-DURNA

Proceedings Paper | 2023 | IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting

The research work presented in this paper proposes a method for modeling the behavior of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) currents for a tap-to-tap time based on the DFT amplitude histograms of the EAF current waves. The method is used to model the EAF current behavior separately for each phase of the EAF operation: boring, melting and refining. The model is verified by comparing the THD histograms and the flicker measurements of the original and modeled EAF current waveforms. The proposed model can be used as an EAF model in the simulation environment for various purposes before the installation of an EAF. The method has low computat . . .ional load compared to various other techniques, since it utilizes only the amplitude distribution parameters of the first 13 frequency components and the one-cycle signal representing the higher order harmonics. The model is novel in the sense that every time the EAF current signal is generated, a unique waveform reflecting the corresponding distributions is generated, which is compatible with the random behavior of the EAF operation. On the Solvability of a Boundary Value Problem for Nonlinear Optimization of Oscillatory Processes

Elmira ABDILDAYEVA

Proceedings Paper | 2024 | AIP Conference Proceedings3085 ( 1 )

The paper investigates the solvability of a boundary value problem in the control of an oscillatory process described by control in partial derivatives of the first order. It has been established that there are an infinite set of controls, as solutions to the system of nonlinear Fredholm integral equations of the first kind, each of which transfers the controlled process from the initial state to the final specified state in a specified time. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a nonlinear optimization solution are found.
