Relationship between Trade Openness and Economic Growth: Evidence from Panel Causality Analysis

Zamira ÖSKÖNBAYEVA

Proceedings Paper | 2019 | Ecological Agriculture and Sustainable Development

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between trade openness and economic growth using the panel data of 125 countries for the period 1992-2015. For this purpose, a three-stage panel Granger causality test has been employed. Countries were divided into two groups as developed and developing countries. In the first stage panel unit root test has been used in order to explore stationarity properties of the series. Then panel co-integration technique has been employed in order to estimate long-run economic relationships between variables. In the last stage panel causality test has been adopted. Accord . . .ing to the findings obtained there is unidirectional short-term causality running from trade openness to economic growth both in developed and developing countries. Policy makers should implement appropriate economic policies to take full advantages of trade openness More less

Persistence in inflation: Does Aggregation Cause Long Memory?

Mehmet BALCILAR

Proceedings Paper | 2004 | Emerging Markets Finance and Trade40 ( 5 )

This paper examines persistence in Turkish inflation rates using data from consumer and wholesale price indices. The inflationary process in Turkey is believed to be highly inertial, which should lead to strongly persistent inflation series. Persistence of seventy-five inflation series at various aggregation levels is examined by estimating models that allow long memory through fractional differencing. The order of fractional differencing is estimated using several semiparametric and maximum likelihood methods. Persistence of each series is evaluated using the time required for a given percentage of the effect of a shock to dissipat . . .e. We find that disaggregate inflation series show no significant persistence. We found that only twelve out of seventy-five series require more than six months for 99 percent of the effect of a shock to dissipate. Thus, the paper finds evidence of spurious long memory due to aggregation. - Keywords: aggregation, fractional differencing, inflation, inertia, long memory models, persistenc More less

A Comparative Analysis of Productivity Growth, Catch-Up, and Convergence in Transition Economies

Ertuğrul DELİKTAŞ

Proceedings Paper | 2005 | Emerging Markets Finance and Trade41 ( 1 )

The paper examines the macroeconomic performance of 25 transition economies using a comparable data set. In order to see whether transition to a market-based economy increased economic efficiency, technical progress, and total factor productivity (TFP), we estimate efficiency measures for Eastern European and Baltic countries and the republics of the former Soviet Union using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis as a confirmatory analysis. According to the SFA estimates, the average annual efficiency level for the 25 transition economies is 0.548, and the average annual rate of growth in technical efficie . . .ncy is 1.8 percent for the 1991-2000 period. The average annual technical change in transition economies is -4.3 percent for the period examined. That is, there is no technological progress, but over the period there has been a technological regress. The sum of the rate of change in technical efficiency and technical change implies a 2.5 percent decline in the average annual TFP. These results suggest that, on average, change in technical efficiency is outweighed by the technical regress. - Keywords: convergence, data envelopment analysis, stochastic production frontiers, technical efficiency, total factor productivity, transition economie More less

Proceedings Paper | 2015 | Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences195

The high nutritional and health-promoting properties of kymyz, a traditional drink of nomads produced from mare's milk, are well-known and reported in literature. The composition of mare's milk is significantly different from that of cow and other ruminants. Fatty acid composition and amino acid profile of mare's milk produced at Suusamyr pastures of Kyrgyzstan were studied during four lactation months (May, June, July and August). The amino acid composition was determined by precolumn derivatization with diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate (DEEMM) in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and 18 amino acids were determined in ma . . .re's milk. Most abundant amino acids were glutamic acid (16.8-21.2%), leucine (8.2-10.1%), lysine (8.9-10.1%) and ornithine (0.1-0.7%) was in a small amount. The percentages of essential AA in protein of mare milk were 46%, 46%, 51%, 48% for May, June, July and August months respectively, which demonstrate the high biological value of milk during all milking season. The fatty acid contents of the milk fat were determined in the form of fatty acid methyl esters by gas chromatograph after methylation with potassium hydroxide in methanol. The concentrations of capric (10:0), lauric (12:0) and myristic acid (14:0) were similar during four lactation months and the concentration of linoleic acid (18:2) was higher in July month. The results of the study have shown that the highest contents of the nutritive compounds were found in the mare's milk obtained in July. - Keywords: amino acids; fatty acids; geographical location; mare milk; milking seaso More less

The Great Powers in Central Asia: Policies of the US and Russia

Zakir ÇOTAYEV

Proceedings Paper | 2013 | Afghanistan and Central Asia: NATO's Role in Regional Security since 9/11 : Book Series: NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal Dynamics106

This paper seeks to examine the foreign policies of the United States and Russia towards Central Asia. The paper also aims at exploring the competition between the two countries and its consequences for the Central Asian states. The main argument of the paper is that despite the fact that the active involvement of the United States and Russia in the Central Asian security produces positive effects for the Central Asian countries, the worsening of their bilateral relations increases their regional competition and undermines political stability in Central Asia. In the aftermath of 9/11, the United States projected its influence to the . . . Central Asia, and maintained its dominance until 2006. Russia challenged the US influence in the region and reasserted itself significantly between 2006 and 2009. This is followed by a period of balancing policies of both the United States and Russia between 2009 and the present More less

Multifractality of the Istanbul and Moscow Stock Market Returns

Mehmet BALCILAR

Proceedings Paper | 2003 | Emerging Markets Finance and Trade39 ( 2 )

There is a growing awareness among financial researchers that the traditional models of asset returns cannot capture essential time series properties of the current stock return data. We examine commonly used models, such as the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) family, and show that these models cannot account for the essential characteristics of the real Istanbul Stock Exchange and Moscow Stock Exchange returns. These models often fail, and when they succeed, they do at the cost of an increasing number of parameters and structural equations. The measures o . . .f risk obtained from these models do not reflect the true risk to traders, since they cannot capture all key features of the data. In this paper, we offer an alternative framework of analysis based on multifractal models. Compared to the traditional models, the multifractal models we use are very parsimonious and replicate all key features of the data with only three universal parameters. The multifractal models have superior risk evaluation performance. They also produce better forecasts at all scales. The paper also offers a justification of the multifractal models for financial modeling. - Keywords: Key words: fractal Brownian motion, Hö, lder exponent, multifractal market hypothesis, multifractal spectrum, scaling phenomena, statistical self-similarity, Wavelet transfor More less

Impact of Afghanistan on the Security of Kyrgyzstan

Camgırbek BÖKÖŞOV

Proceedings Paper | 2013 | Afghanistan and Central Asia: NATO's Role in Regional Security since 9/11 : Book Series: NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal Dynamics106

This paper explores the impact of the security problems of Afghanistan on Kyrgyzstan's current national security situation. Afghanistan's main channels of indirect influence are the narcotics trafficking and the infiltration of the international terrorist groups into the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic. Besides, the “Afghan crisis” has a direct impact on the national security of Kyrgyz Republic. The identification and assessment of Afghanistan's influence on the security situation in Kyrgyzstan necessitates an analysis of the social, political, geopolitical, economic and ideological aspects of this complex issue. In this paper, it . . .is emphasized that the negative regional influence of the security situation in Afghanistan could be contained depending on the stability of the internal socio-political situation in the Kyrgyz Republic and the existence of a reliable system of the international cooperation against the terrorism and extremism in the region. The active participation of the Kyrgyz Republic in the socio-economic recovery of Afghanistan could also have a positive impact on the strengthening of Kyrgyzstan's national security too More less
